New Texas women’s basketball head coach Vic Schaefer and Baylor’s Kim Mulkey might be Big 12 rivals, but they noted Tuesday at the “Beyond the Baseline: Building a Championship Culture” broadcast event that they share the excitement of having an opportunity to chase a national title in their own back yards this year.
The 2021 Women’s Final Four will be held April 2-4 in San Antonio, the first time since 2010 that it will be held in the Alamo City and four years removed from the last time it came to the Lone Star State.
“We will remember the Alamo,” Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair when talking about the idea of one of the Texas power schools contending for a national title in their home state.
The women’s game has a rich history in the state of Texas over the last few decades. The Longhorns won the national championship in 1986, Texas Tech in 1993 and Baylor in 2005, 2012 and 2019. Connecticut has been far and away the most successful program in women’s college basketball, with 11 national titles since 1995, when it beat perennial power Tennessee in the championship game, and teams like Oregon and South Carolina have surged to the forefront of the national championship conversation.
