Texas women’s basketball to visit Texas Tech Sunday in Play4K Pink game

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas women’s basketball team’s six-game win streak was snapped Friday night when the Longhorns scored a season-low 44 points in a loss to No. 2/1 Baylor at the Erwin Center. That was their only loss of the week, however, as they won, 70-53, Wednesday at Oklahoma in a game in which four UT players scored in double figures.

Like the Texas men’s team, the women’s team’s record now stands at 14-7. The Longhorns are now 6-3 in conference play. UT is third in the Big 12, a game [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level2)]behind TCU, and obviously behind 8-0 Baylor, midway through the conference part of the season.

This sets up an interesting scenario for Texas in the next few weeks, as the Longhorns will travel to Lubbock for their lone game of the week, against Texas Tech at 1 p.m. Sunday in a game that will be broadcast on ESPNU. If Texas can get the win in the second meeting of the season between the teams — UT beat the Red Raiders, 92-66, Jan. 15 in Austin — and then get past Iowa State and Kansas next week, they will have a good shot to move into second place in the conference race, as TCU has to play Baylor on next Wednesday. The Longhorns, who lost, 65-63, in their first meeting with the Horned Frogs, will face TCU again Feb. 26.

Texas has a full week to prepare for the Red Raiders, who showed off their offensive firepower Saturday in a 109-79 rout of Oklahoma State. Tech comes into the week with a solid 14-5 record, but just a 3-5 Big 12 record that has the Red Raiders sitting in a three-way tie for sixth place. Many of those losses can be attributed to poor shooting games; TTU has shot 30 percent or below in each of its five conference losses.

Everyone has poor shooting days, but luckily for Tech head coach Marlene Stollings, senior Brittney Brewer doesn’t have many. Brewer has been especially good from three-point range in their past two games, going a combined 5-for-10 from behind the arc. With the ability to play down low as well, Brewer has totaled a team-high 196 total rebounds, 66 of which have come on the offensive end. Averaging a double-double with 15 points per game and 10.3 rebounds per game, Brewer will be the primary threat the Horns will have to contain.

Sophomore Chrislyn Carr has played well above her years this season, shooting exceptionally well (39 percent) from behind the arc. In addition to her shooting, Carr has excelled as a passer throughout the year, dishing out a team-high 90 assists, with 38 of them coming in Big 12 action.

While Texas has a week to prepare for Texas Tech, the Red Raiders first must face Kansas State Wednesday.

Sunday’s Texas-Texas Tech game has special meaning as this is the annual game in which teams across the country raise money for research to fight all cancers affecting women, known as the Play4K Pink game. The game will honor the late Kay Yow, the women’s basketball head coach for North Carolina State for 34 years.
