Texas football head coach Tom Herman finally got back on the practice field with his team Wednesday … but not until he got to announce the addition of 19 future Longhorns.

“What a great group of young men we signed,” Herman said. “All of the guys we signed, we feel like, are our kind of guys … These are all guys that fit our profile, of not just the tangible makeup of height, weight, 40 time, vertical jump — all that good stuff — but also, who are they? What’s their character? Are they a team captain? Are they from a winning program? These guys all check the box.”

Eight are offensive players, nine are defensive players, one is a punter and one, Ja’tavion Sanders, is such a decorated athlete that Herman admitted Sanders “will play both sides of the ball here at Texas. In what capacity — we haven’t quote ironed that out just yet. We’ve got time to figure that out, but we feel like he’s too good of a talent not to.”

The class includes 12 players who played their high school ball in Texas, as well as three from Louisiana, and one each from Florida, Colorado, California and Australia. One, defensive back Darion Dunn, is a transfer from McNeese, joining 18 freshmen in the class. Herman identified nine — wide receiver Jaden Alexis, defensive back JD Coffey, offensive lineman Hayden Connor, linebacker Terrence Cooks, tight end Juan Davis, Derrick Harris, tight end Gunnar Helm, Jamier Johnson and Dunn — who will enroll at Texas in January, allowing them to begin learning the UT offense and defense and participate in spring practice.

Herman said the players who signed Wednesday are “just the beginning of the class of 2021. I would imagine there would be some more additions throughout January and February in that spring signing period, as well.”

The players who signed Wednesday with Texas:

Wide receiver Jaden Alexis (5-11 / 185) — Pompano Beach (Monarch), Florida.
An all-county and all-district selection … a PrepStar All-Midlands Region selection ... elected not to play in the 2020 season … named first-team All-County by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, and second-team All-Broward 8A-6A by The Miami Herald in 2019 … pulled in 49 receptions for 894 yards and eight touchdowns, while also rushing for one touchdown as a junior … also played defense and recorded one interception … posted six 100-yard receiving games … Also participated in track and field in high school … holds personal-bests of 10.75 in the 100-meter dash and 22.27 in the 200-meter dash ... his father, Rich, was a running back who played college football at the University of Washington and is tied for seventh on the school career rushing touchdowns list with 28, he also went on to play in the NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the St. Louis Rams.
