Volleyball sweeps Kansas again to improve to 4-0
AUSTIN, Texas —More often than not, if something is worth doing, it’s worth doing again.
That could be the philosophy of the Texas volleyball team, which swept visiting Kansas in straight sets twice in as many nights at the Frank Erwin Center.
For the fourth time in as many matches, junior outside hitter Logan Eggleston led the Longhorns in kills with 18 to lead UT to a 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 sweep of the Jayhawks. The victory came a day after Texas knocked of KU, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22.
The victory lifted the Longhorns’ record to 4-0, while Kansas fell to 1-3. In a season in which teams are playing only against Big 12 opponents, each team’s conference record matches its overall season record.
Eggleston’s kills equal her season high; she also notched 18 in UT’s 3-1 win over Oklahoma. She also had seven digs, two blocks and a service ace, while Skylar Fields bolstered the attack with 10 kills, reaching double digits for the fourth time in as many matches this season
Asjia O’Neal and Brionne Butler led the Texas defense with six and five blocks, respectively. Butler added five kills, while O’Neal added four. Altogether, the Longhorns amassed 12 blocks, half of which came in the third and final set.
In Thursday’s victory, Eggleston recorded a match-leading 16 kills and added an ace, seven digs and two blocks to lead the Texas volleyball team to a 25-22, 25-19, 25-22 sweep in the Longhorns’ 2020 home opener.
Fields added 11 kills, while O’Neal added eight.
Butler and Molly Phillips contributed six kills apiece, and each played a significant defensive role: Butler notched five blocks, while Phillips added four.
Setter Jhenna Gabriel steered the offense, handing out 43 assists, and added 19 digs, a block and a kill.
Texas has dropped just one set in four matches, with a trio of three-set sweeps.
The Longhorns will return to action next Thursday and Friday against Iowa State. Each match against the Cyclones will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be carried on the Longhorn Network.
