Women’s golf finishes second at Betsy Rawls Invitational
AUSTIN, Texas — Senior Kaitlyn Papp tied for fourth place, finishing in the top five for the 10th time in her college career, to help the Texas women's golf team finish second in the Betsy Rawls Invitational at the UT Golf Club.
The Longhorns shot an 11-under-par 853 (293-279-281) in the three-round tournament to finish 11 strokes behind tournament champion Baylor. The Bears' three-round 842 was the second-lowest score in the history of the tournament.
"I thought it was a great final round," Texas head coach Ryan Murphy said. "We played pretty solid golf today. Pappy had a nice 68 and a nice top-five finish for her. It's a little easier to swallow when you lose by 11 than it is to lose by one or two.
"It wasn't that tight at the very end. We would have had to play an extraordinary round today if we were going to catch the Bears. We didn't get it going on that level. I was proud of them. I thought it was a solid day and a really solid final two rounds of the tournament."
Papp shot an eight-under-par 208 (73-67-68). Her 68 Sunday was the 18th career round in the 60s. She had 14 birdies over the weekend, the second-most of all players in the tournament.
The Horns' performance was a significant leap from the team's performance two weeks ago at the Schooner Classic, in which Texas placed 10th, facing many of the same teams they faced in the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
Up next for Texas is a long road trip east, as the team will face some of the toughest opponents in the country at the prestigious East Lake Cup in Atlanta, Georgia. The event will be broadcast live on Golf Channel.
The Longhorn Network will televise a replay of the Betsy Rawls Invitational beginning at 7 p.m. (Central time) Oct. 28.
