BRUINS, LUNA NAMED TO WCWS ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
OKLAHOMA CITY – After impressive performances during the Women’s College World Series, seniors Kim Bruins and Blaire Luna were named to the event’s All-Tournament Team. The pair of selections tied the program high, set in 2003 when Cat Osterman and Tamara Poppe earned the distinction.
Bruins drove in six runs, tied with Oklahoma’s Keilani Ricketts for the most by any player during the WCWS. Bruins provided the game-winning RBI in both of UT’s victories. She finished second among all players at the event with two home runs and ranked fourth in total bases with nine. In the circle, Bruins earned one of three saves recorded at the event, sealing the Longhorns’ 6-3 victory over Arizona State in the opener.
Luna led all pitchers at the WCWS with 12.1 strikeouts per seven innings and tied for second in overall strikeouts with 38, one behind the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, Ricketts. Luna’s two victories tied for the second most during the event. In the contest against Florida, she struck out 14 batters, including recording 10 consecutive outs via the whiff from the second through fifth innings.
Texas’ appearance in the WCWS was the program’s fifth in program history and the Longhorns advanced to the semifinals of the event for the third time. Osterman was selected to the All-Tournament Team three times (2003, 2005, 2006) while, prior to 2013, Poppe (2003) had been the only other Texas player to earn the honor.
