HISTORIC RUN – SARA SUTHERLAND

Texas Track and Field, Sara SutherlandSophomore Sara Sutherland broke the school record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:53.73 — a record that stood since 1989 when Trina Leopold ran a 15:56.87 — at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships March 10. Sutherland improved her previous best time by six seconds to finish fifth overall, earning her first career All-American honor. “I thank my blessings,” Sutherland said. “What works best for me is honing in on catching one person at a time. It’s those small goals that keep me encouraged throughout the race.”

Sophomore Allison Peter also had a career-best performance, breaking the track record in the 200-meter preliminaries with a time of 23.01. In the finals, she ran a 22.95 but LSU’s Kimberlyn Duncan clocked a 22.74 in the race,
